Strabismus is an eye condition where the eyes point in different directions. You may have heard this commonly referred to as a “crossed eyes” or “wandering eyes” or a “lazy eye.” Strabismus is a visual defect where one eye cannot focus with the other. There are multiple types of strabismus including eyes that turn in, turn out or turn up or down. Eyes that turn inwards are often what you see in children. Strabismus may be present early in infancy or may develop later in life. Most cases of Strabismus do get detected in the childhood years. Strabismus may be present constantly or only occasionally. In adults, it often results from progressive untreated or unsuccessfully treated strabismus in childhood.
For more information regarding pediatric strabismus or adult strabismus, please feel free to visit the American Academy of Ophthalmology website. Seltzer Laser Center encourages any parents of young children to research this eye condition for a better understanding of what they will be facing.
