Diabetic Retinopathy

If you are a diabetes patient and concerned about your eye sight please contact our office as soon as possible. The longer someone has diabetes the greater the chances for vision loss or diabetic retinopathy. Diabetes can cause major problems with your eyes including permanent vision loss and retinal detachment. When diabetic retinopathy occurs circulation issues will cause the retina to become oxygen deficient. If blood is to leak into the retina patients may experience an eye condition commonly referred to as flashes and floaters. The longer that the diabetic condition persists blood vessel abnormalities may lead to serious retinal issues like retinal detachment.

These parts of your eyes (LISTED below) can be potentially damaged from diabetes. This is of critical concern because the parts in jeopardy are critical to vision stability. Without the optic nerve connecting to the brain images cannot be transmitted.

Optic nerve - The optic nerve send the images to the brain
Retina -The retina is the lining at the back of the eye that connects the optic nerve
Lens -  The lens is at the front of the eye and focuses light towards the actual retina
