DUST CAN BE AN EXCITING: "Well the story I usual tell people, among other things about the surgery that I had, was I remember, after the first 2 weeks, and I stopped wearing the shields to bed at night, I woke up the very next morning after not wearing the shields, and reached over and grabbed the telephone, and called my husband on the phone. I said, 'Guess what I'm doing?' And he said,' What?' And I said, 'I'm looking at the dust on our ceiling fan'. you know, I'd never noticed it before. because you know, you wake up in the morning, you don't have your glasses on, the contacts are in the bathroom, and I would just get up, put my glasses on while I was getting up, and walk out. I never realized that our ceiling fan was as filthy as it was. I said 'This is so cool! You need to get home and clean the fan.' It was there and I had never noticed it before."
THE SURGERY DAY: "After I'd had the surgery, we went to Arby's. I don't know why I was famished, it was only 10:30 in the morning. Wayne said, 'Are you OK going into the restaurant?' And I said, 'Yeah, no problem. Hey, I just had something great done. if anybody asks what's the problem, or they look at me funny, I've got something to tell them.' I stood at the counter and looked at the menu behind the counter and could read it. and I wanted to cry! Because, its like, oh my gosh, its real, its not make believe, its not a fantasy, its not a goal anymore, its real, and I was just so tickled. I was just so tickled!"
CAMPING, CARS, AND CONTACTS: "One of the things we like to do is we like to go camping. It's always been a hassle wearing contact lenses and camping or any kind of outdoor activity. Always worried about something flying into my eye, getting underneath that contact lens and trying to take it out, clean it, don't have cleaner with me, the wind is blowing, afraid the thing is going to fly out of my hand, and I'll never be able to see out of that eye again. I don't have to worry about any of that. It's just so nice to be able to wake up and go through my day. I've been married for 16 years, and my husband likes to ride down the road, when the weather's pleasant, and role the windows down. And I'm forever saying, 'Role the window back up, please.' I just can't. my hair's in my face, I'm afraid the hair's going to whip in there and grab a hold of that contact lens and it's gone. I don't have to worry about that now. Now I don't have to worry about knocking that contact lens off my eye. That's a blessing."
MODERN DAY MIRACLE: "I remember hearing Dr. Seltzer speak years and years ago about Radial Keratotomy. I spoke to my husband about it and we decided, 'Let's just wait. Something better is bound to come along. Just wait. just be patient.' And sure enough the day has come, and I am so thankful. I really feel like it's a modern day miracle, that man has the intelligence, the desire to want to do good for other people, and now we have the technology to go along with it, so it makes a big difference, it will make a big difference in somebody's life."
