What is a cataract?

A cataract is a gradual clouding of the naturally clear crystalline lens of the eye. This clouding inhibits the passage of light to the retina, causing poor night vision, sensitivity to light, blurry vision and dimming of colors.  Many people compare it to looking through wax paper or a steamy window. Most cataracts develop as part of the aging process and as mentioned previously this is natural. In the United States, about 50% of people ages 65-74 have at least one cataract, and about 70% of those over age 75.  Although aging is the most common cause of cataracts,  it has also been known to be present at birth in some individuals (congenital).  Cataracts may also be related to family history, an injury to the eye, diabetes, long-term exposure to sunlight and some medications.

The only treatment for a cataract is the removal of this cloudy lens, which will be replaced by a clear man-made lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL).    Cataracts surgery is performed on almost 2  million people a year, and over 98% report improved vision.  Some people find that their vision after cataract surgery is even better then it was before the cataract started forming. Please consult directly with our practice to determine your best options at the time of cataract surgery. There have been recent developments in intraocular lens technology that can make significant improvement in vision after cataract surgery. Our staff is available to discuss the options.
